The best of the Stockholm Christmas markets to experience a historical feel is Skansen as it dates back to 1903.

The Skansen Christmas market is held in Bollnästorget, where around 70 market stalls are filled with everything from marzipan to wool crafts. When hunger strikes, you can indulge in everything from sweet to savory treats.

It’s one of my favorites because, in addition to strolling around the market, you can see how Christmas was celebrated in the past. Skansen’s Christmas market is not just a place for shopping; it’s a journey through time, where traditions and magic unite in a unique atmosphere.

2. Stortorget, Sweden’s oldest Christmas market

On the small and intimate Stortorget in Gamla Stan, you will find Stockholm’s oldest and most famous Christmas markets. Stortorget’s Christmas market started in 1837 and is Sweden’s oldest Christmas market.

Each winter, Stortorget transforms into a winter wonderland with 41 red booths lining the cobbled streets, selling everything from sweets and handmade crafts to roasted almonds. Many travel here just to experience this classic Christmas market in Stockholm.

What makes Stortorget’s market special is its atmosphere, which makes you feel like you’ve stepped into an old-fashioned postcard. That’s why Gamla Stan’s Christmas market can rival the big ones in Germany and Austria.

3. Sigtuna, perfect for a winter day trip

  • Address: Stora Torget, Sigtuna
  • Dates: 1 December, 8 December, 15 December, and 22 December, 11:00-16:00

On four Sundays during Advent, this traditional Christmas market is held in Sweden’s oldest town, Sigtuna. Even though it’s outside of Stockholm, it has become very popular and is definitely worth a visit.

All year round, Sigtuna’s town center attracts visitors with its low wooden houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, but during Christmas, the town takes on a fairy-tale-like glow. Sigtuna’s picturesque streets are filled with market stalls and food vendors where you can buy unique crafts and local delicacies. And, of course, Santa Claus makes a personal appearance.

The market is located at Stora Torget, along Stora Gatan, and outside Sigtuna Stadshotell. In addition to markets and food, Sigtuna offers music! The market has a full program of Christmas music, from choir singing to Lucia processions. Why not stay overnight at the charming Sigtuna Stadshotell, built in 1909, to fully experience the town?

Taxinge Slott hosts an annual Christmas market with over 130 of the country’s best craftsmen, making it Sweden’s largest Christmas market. In fact, the market is so large and ambitious that it’s referred to as a Christmas fair (Julmässa) by the organizers and has an entrance fee of 100 SEK (around £7).

No Christmas market would be complete without food, and at Taxinge, you can both shop for and sample festive delicacies. When your sweet tooth calls, Taxinge’s famous cake buffet, the largest in Sweden, is ready for you.

You can easily spend a full day at Taxinge Slott, built in 1803 with medieval roots. As darkness falls, fires and torches light up both the castle and the Christmas market, creating a cozy atmosphere.

Here, you can buy everything from vegetables, cheeses, and jams made from hand-picked berries to lamb meat and ostrich sausages directly from Swedish farmers and makers.
