Top 10 best places to travel alone internationally in 2024

Are you looking for the best places to travel alone across the globe? As a frequent solo traveler, the mark of great solo travel destinations includes: Generally safe, plenty to do or observe and opportunities to connect with others.

Recently, KAYAK and OpenTable conducted a data study on the top destinations for solo travelers. If you have solo travel aspirations, your next dream destination could be on this list.

Despite taking my first solo trip a decade ago, I was a late bloomer. I didn’t fully embrace or grasp the true value of solo travel until more recent years, in my 30s. But now? I will happily be your biggest cheerleader for it.

Whether you’re setting out to deepen your self-relationship, become more confident or see as much of the world as possible before it’s too late – go.

1. Berlin

Breaking into the top spot of solo travel destinations is Berlin. It’s a highly walkable, historic and artsy city with plenty to do. By day, enjoy exploring the city on foot or by bike to take in the major landmarks and street art. Indulge in the decadent pastries you’ll have no trouble finding at one of the many German cafes – check out Canal Berlin for delicious artisanal options.

As you explore certain areas, be respectful of the heavy history around you. Be present with the intent to learn and honor, rather than taking lighthearted photos for example.

Overall, Berlin is characterized as a vibrant and diverse city overflowing with art and culture.

The city also has a strong nightlife culture. With standard precautions, you can experience it even as a solo traveler. Alternatively, make an effort to meet people at a hostel or on a group tour who you’d feel comfortable inviting to explore Berlin’s clubs with you.

2. Vancouver

Nature lovers, Vancouver should be on your radar for its gorgeous mountains, lush forests and coastal proximity. Want to get active on your solo vacation? Here you can kayak, hike, golf, camp and sunset stroll against stunning backdrops. 

Thrill-seekers, don’t miss Capilano Suspension Bridge! 

Granville Island is a must-visit. This popular area offers scenic Vancouver views and has a variety of shops worth exploring. Stanley Park is a great place for cycling or jogging. For a grounding experience, make your way to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden.  

If you want to take it easy while still enjoying Vancouver’s beautiful surroundings, plan a picnic at a park or beach. For some quality time immersed in nature, Vancouver belongs at the top of your list.  

3. Montreal 

Another of the best places for solo travel, according to KAYAK and OpenTable, is Montréal. If you’re traveling from the US and not yet ready to go all the way to Europe solo, consider Montréal instead. 

Located in the French part of Canada, French is the official language but you’ll be able to get by with English. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to practice the art of beginning interactions with “Bonjour.”

If you’re greeted with a “Bonjour / Hi,” respond with “Hi,” to indicate you’d like to continue the conversation in English. Despite being in Canada, you’ll feel like you’re in Europe as you explore Montréal’s charming Old Town and beautiful Notre Dame Basilica. 

As Canada’s top foodie destination, this is the perfect trip for you if you’re into eating well. Not sure where to begin?  OpenTable recommends checking out Le Pois Penché for French comfort classics, LOV McGill for vegetarian delights and Restaurant Toque! for classic French Candian cuisine. 

Montréal also has a popular nightlife scene. As a solo traveler, you could visit a bar solo or join a local bar crawl with a group. I’ve done both in various cities and based on your comfort level both are enjoyable. Just remember not to overconsume so you can maintain your awareness. 

4. Paris

If you’re looking for solo birthday trip ideas, I can personally recommend Paris. The city of lights provided the perfect backdrop for my solo birthday celebrations a few years ago. 

Some say Paris is overrated, or that Parisians are rude. I’ve visited five times, often on my own, and love it more each time. English is more widely spoken now than years ago, and you’re likely to find restaurant menus in English. 

While you don’t need to speak French, you should absolutely offer a “Bonjour,” every time you enter a shop or begin a new encounter – it’s considered rude not to!

Don’t assume Paris is only for couples, either. Even solo, you can bask in the romance this city exudes. Walk along the winding streets of Montmartre, take a pastry-making class (I recommend booking with Patisserie a la Carte), admire art at one of the many museums, vintage shop along the Marais or hop aboard a Seine cruise. 

Plus, cafe culture here is strong and it’s not unusual to sit at a table alone to watch the world go by. 

5. Milan

Italy is one of my favorite solo travel destinations in the world thanks to its melodic language, preserved ancient sites, scrumptious eats and warm culture. Different cities and regions within Italy can vary significantly in atmosphere and offerings, though. For the art lovers and fashionistas who appreciate the finer things in life, Milan is for you. 

The city is generally safe, with the caveat to once again practice basic precautions. You should be most mindful of potential pickpockets. Traveling with an anti-theft, cross-body bag that you wear swung around to your front is ideal. 

The main attractions of Milan’s city center are quite close together, making this an easy destination to navigate alone on foot. You can be in the historic Old Town one moment, and amongst the lively canal district (Navigli) with a reasonable walk. 

One of the best ways to get to know a new place is through its food. Anywhere in Italy, including in Milan, I highly recommend taking a cooking class of some sort. I took a cooking class in Rome years ago, and to this day can recreate the art of homemade pasta as a result. 

Milan is also a great base from which to take a variety of day trips, including to luxurious Lake Como.

6. Dublin 

Ireland seems to be having a moment this year. Nearly every other person I speak with is excitedly heading off to the Emerald Isle. Coming in at number 6 on the ranking of best places to solo travel is Dublin.

Practically speaking, it’s a huge help that the most dominant language spoken in Dublin is English. You can also easily get around alone using the buses and trams, locally known as the Luas, or ‘speed’ in Irish.

Beyond that, Dublin is fun. 

You’ll feel the revelry as you stroll about the cobbled streets. It’s easy to dance with a friendly stranger at one of the hundreds of bars in Dublin. Or simply observe the happy couples dancing on the streets. Visiting the Guinness Storehouse is a must. Whether you’ve savored a Guinness before or have your first sip here, enjoy a pint at the Gravity Bar as you take in 360-degree city views. 

There are plenty of things to do in Dublin to immerse yourself in history and heritage as well. One of my favorite memories is taking a guided day trip to the Cliffs of Moher. It’s a great way to see more while connecting with fellow travelers. 

If you like chatting with locals when traveling, that’s another reason to make your way to Dublin. People tend to be friendly and welcoming here.

7. Toronto 

For international travel that feels closer to home, Canada is clearly striking a chord with solo travelers. Coming in at number 7 on the list of best places to travel solo is Toronto. 

As a Chicago native, I’ll call out the fact that Toronto and Chicago have been designated sister cities since 1991. The two are similar in terms of geography and population. 

If you appreciate the vibe of big cities then chances are, you’ll have a good time in Toronto. There are many working professionals in the city so it’s not unusual to see folks dining solo. 

Spend time wandering through popular areas like Kensington Market and the Distillery District. For a great view at sunset, take the ferry or water taxi to the nearby Toronto Islands. There, you’ll also find an amusement park and access to water activities. You could easily spend a half or full day there. 

Toronto’s CN Tower is popular with tourists, and if you’re into hockey you’ll want to check out the Hockey Hall of Fame. Have a day to spare? Book a guided day trip to Niagara Falls.

8. Dubai 

If you’re seeking out safe places to travel alone as a woman, Dubai should be on your radar. There are cameras all over the place and punishment for crimes is severe, contributing to the high sense of safety in this city. 

Another reason Dubai is ideal for solo female travelers is that many hotels offer ‘Ladies Day’ discounts, great for planning a pool or private beach day in an elevated environment. 

Often considered the global hub of the Middle East, English is widely spoken in Dubai. So, no need to fret if you don’t speak Arabic. Although it’s always kind to learn some basic phrases in the native language of the country you’re visiting such as: Hello, please, thank you, sorry and excuse me. 

You can get around Dubai using Uber, the local app called Careem, taxis or public transportation. Spend some time at the vast Dubai mall, and have fun exploring Global Village. There’s plenty to do in Dubai for the traveler who appreciates opulence and natural wonders.

Remember, you’ll be in a Muslim country. It’s important to dress modestly both for your own comfort as well as out of respect for local culture. 

9. Mexico City 

Mexico City might not be the first destination that comes to mind when considering safe places to travel alone. But I can tell you from firsthand experience that Mexico City is an amazing option for solo travelers. 

Let me paint you the picture we don’t often see: Tranquil green spaces, streets dotted with purple Jacarandá trees, aesthetic cafes, cool cocktail bars and big city buzz akin to what you feel in Chicago or NYC. 

That’s what comes to my mind when I think about Mexico City. This global city is a great place for cultural immersion, meeting new people from around the world and indulging your foodie whims.

Follow the same safety protocol you would in any big city. Keep your belongings secure at all times. Don’t wander out alone after dark (join a group experience instead). Keep your wits about you by moderating alcohol intake. 

Do your research on neighborhoods where you might feel most comfortable solo (like Polanco, Condesa and Roma Norte).

One of my favorite things to do is grab a pastry from Esperanza and enjoy it in Chapultepec Park nearby. Another is strolling along Avenida Amsterdam, stopping at any shops that catch my eye along the way.

There are plenty of small group food and activity tours or day trips available as well, if you decide you want company. 

10. London 

London is another destination that KAYAK and OpenTable discovered is a solo travel favorite. It’s easy to blend in amongst the international crowd in this metropolis. London is perfect for the solo traveler who wants to be surrounded by lively action. 

While London is huge and could feel overwhelming, it’s very well connected via its underground train system – the tube. The Covent Garden area is centrally located and a good area to stay for first-timers. 

No matter where you stay, make sure to be near a tube station. On my last visit, I stayed at the Hilton Paddington, which is connected to the Paddington station for added convenience. This made it easy and efficient to get all around London.

On that same trip, I booked a photo shoot with a professional photographer. It was a great way to meet fellow travelers, find the best viewpoints with the help of a local and capture memories of your solo adventure all at once. 

Usually, I’d say skip the tour buses and walk as much as possible around a new city. But in London, riding a double decker bus is part of the experience. Hop on board, make your way to the top floor and see if you can snag a front row seat to take in the sights from a unique vantage point. 

There’s no shortage of things to do in London to occupy your time, from museums and shows to afternoon teas. London also has a thriving food scene, and reservations are a good idea. As a solo traveler, you can also try your luck just walking in. 

If you want a pause, grab a coffee and head to Potters Field Park. Sit here for a while as you take in views of the iconic Tower Bridge (my favorite landmark in London).
