Looking for the best places to visit in France? From the beaches of the French Riviera to the peaks of the Alps and picturesque Breton villages, these are just some of my favorite tried-and-tested destinations. Whether you are with family, friends, or traveling solo there’s something for everyone.

1. Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo in Brittany is a great place to visit in France for all ages. The historic atmosphere of its centuries-old walls, combined with the beauty of its beaches makes it an ideal place to stay for those looking to combine history, nature, and adventure.

2. Étretat

Étretat in Normandy is a breathtaking place. During my visit, I was amazed by the grandeur of the cliffs. Sailing at the foot of them was an unforgettable experience for my whole family. The gardens of Étretat, with their sculptures and original arrangements, are another great place to visit, and my children loved them too. 

Where to stay? The Domaine Saint Clair Le Donjon, a charming hotel with stunning sea views.

3. Honfleur

Another option for your trip to Normandy is the charming town of Honfleur. This town is just like a painting. The colorful reflections of the houses on the water, the cobbled streets, and the bohemian atmosphere of the old port have an undeniable charm. I also loved the painting workshops available for children when I visited with my family. It was a unique opportunity for them to express themselves artistically while immersing themselves in the history of this city of artists.

Where to stay? L’Absinthe Hotel, a charming hotel with stunning sea views. With just 11 rooms this historic residence from the 16th century is a memorable place to stay.

4. Fontainebleau

A cobblestone path lined with potted plants and green lawn leads to the Palace of Fontainebleau, a medieval manor house with an outdoor double staircase, multiple windows, and blue roofing.

Located under an hour or so from Paris, Fontainebleau is home to a majestic castle or ‘chateau’ and an immense forest. If you like the great outdoors, the forest has lots of trails for walks and hikes while the castle is a living testimony to the history of France and offers great guided tours.

Where to stay? L’Hotel Aigle Noir is an elegant and cozy hotel located a few steps from the castle.

5. Carcassonne

The city of Carcassonne in the South of France is like an open-air history book. Medieval shows, hosted by knights and damsels, offer an interactive and fun way to experience history. A bike ride along the Canal du Midi is another great way to explore and discover the peaceful banks of the Carcassonne canals.

6. Annecy

Meanwhile the town of Annecy, with its picturesque canals and castle, is an ideal place for walks. Hikes in the surrounding Alps are another option for a more adventurous vacation. From there, several ski resorts are quickly accessible in the winter. A perfect place to visit in France this summer or winter.

7. Biarritz

Bordeaux, with its grandiose architecture, warm atmosphere, and great wine, is a city where history and modernity mix. Exploring Bordeaux by bike is an ideal way to immerse yourself in the city’s atmosphere, stopping to admire iconic places like the Miroir d’Eau and Place de la Bourse. The city is also an educational playground, thanks to its numerous museums and cultural spaces.
